Nocloini New Genus 2 pilacho (Barnes)

"Nocloa pilacho"

Hemiceras pilacho Barnes, 1904, Canad. Ent., 36: 266.

Diagnosis: Nocloini New Genus 2 pilacho is superficially nearly indistinguishable from its sister species Nocloini New Genus 2 new species 1. The dark bar of the median area found in most specimens of new species 1 is absent in pilacho. The general appearance of pilacho is slightly lighter, slightly duller, and slightly more uniform in coloration. The specialized setae or scales found along the costa of the valve of the male genitalia in new species 1 are absent in pilacho and the closely related Mexican species alcandra. The clasper is about twice as large in new species 1 as in pilacho. The uncus of new species 1 is short and the apical half is ovate; in contrast the uncus of pilacho is linear, not ovate. The lateral, secondary diverticulum of the vesica found in new species 1 is absent in pilacho. The female genitalia of new species 1 are generally as in the generic description. The ductus bursae of pilacho is relatively narrow, about eight times longer than wide. In contrast the ductus bursae is relatively wide in new species 1, about three to four times as long as wide. Wing length: mean = 12.15 mm, standard deviation = 0.99 mm, n = 6.

Adults have been collected in August.

Distribution: Nocloini New Genus 2 pilacho is an extremely rare moth in collections. The species is known only from the Baboquivari and Santa Catalina Mountains of Pima County in south-central Arizona.
