Edentates

The Edentata are represent in the United States by a single species, the Nine-banded Armadillo. The "Nine-banded" part of its name comes from the number of rings of horny plates found around the center of its body. Armadillos eat primarily insects and are found in the south-central part of the United States (Texas north to southeastern Nebraska) and eastward along the Gulf Coast to most of Florida.
