Spruces
(Picea) |
|
The genus Picea is a group of closely related species with about 35 species world-wide and 7 native species recognized from North America (north of Mexico). The species are evergreen and mostly tall and conical. The genus occurs in the boreal and montane regions of the Northern Hemisphere with a single species reaching Taiwan in the Old World and one species reaching the Mexican highlands in the New World. The members of the genus can usually be identified by the woody pegs from which each needle arises on the branches and twigs. The female cones hang from the middle of the branches (not from the tips as in Tsuga) and are not upright as in the firs (Abies). Identification Features:
Cones hanging from the branches, but back from the tip of the branch.
Needles (leaves) each arising from a woody peg on the branch. |
