North American Thuja Species Accounts

 

CEDARS (IN PART) (THUJA)

There are five species of Thuja, 2 in North America and 3 in eastern Asia. The species are easily recognized by the flattened foliage and the distinctive female cones. The members of Thuja are also sometimes called Arborvitae (Tree of Life in Latin) because of extract from the resin increase blood pressure and reduces fevers.

 

Characteristic Features:

Foliage flattened; scale-like leaves stubby; female cones point upward and are composed of 8 to 12 cones scales.
