Ten species of Hemlocks are currently recognized in the world, 4 of which are found in North America. Eastern Hemlock is one of the dominant species of the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada in the Eastern Deciduous Forest. The species are usually fairly easy to recognize by their small, relatively fragile cones borne on the tips of small branches. Hemlocks are important as ornamental plants and as a paper pulp species. Identification Features:
Cones relatively small and hanging from the tips of the branches.
Needles arising from raised, sloping cushions. |
